Were There Thorns Before The Fall?
Were there thorns before the fall? When Adam and Eve sinned and were cast out of the garden, was all creation cursed as well? Are earthquakes and tsunamis results of our sinful nature? Or, as is says in the Psalms, does all nature still declare the glory of God? Is nature still perfect, and exactly as God created it?
If you believe in the traditional creationist theory, including the flood, then you would believe that the “greenhouse” effect that existed before the flood would probably have prevented such meteorological occurrences such as tornados and hurricanes, and logic would lead you to believe that the flood was sent because of man’s sin, and thus the greenhouse effect was lost, leaving the atmosphere prone to natural disasters. So with this view, natural catastrophic events could be blamed on our sinful nature.
But what about earthquakes? Would we still have earthquakes if we had not sinned? On the other hand, would we have magnificently beautiful mountains to climb and gaze at if it were not for earthquakes? Such majestic scenery as the Grand Teton mountains or the Colorado Rockies viewed from
Pike’s Peak are such that can leave you breathless. These speak to me of God’s wonder and power…but are these, too, a result of man’s fall?
And then I look at a rose. Would it be as appreciated without its thorns? Were these finger-pricking, hostile flowers created this way? Did God intend these queens of all flora to be beauties to the eyes and bitches to the hands? Perhaps He wants us to see the duality of life, that there will always be pain and beauty. Or did we curse the roses as well?
